Pictures of Reference (POR)

Like an object of reference (OOR), a picture of reference (POR) is a photograph that is used continuously to represent an activity/ item/ place or person. These photographs are then used to help a child to understand what is happening in their environment, to support transitions and understanding of what might be coming next. You can use POR for areas/activities in the home and out in the community. Creating a folder to store your child’s photographs of reference in, can help to be consistent in using them throughout the day. As you child develops a consistent understanding of photographs of reference, it may be appropriate to use a ‘Now and Next’ folder that displays two photographs. Please contact your child's class teacher should you require further information about the communication aids your child may use during the school day to support their understanding.
