P.E.

The key emphasis for pupils in Key Stage Four PE continues to be on the development and progression of fundamental skills of movement. These include three main areas of:

  • Methods of movement
  • Balance
  • Object control

Pupils work on the next steps based on their prior skills and knowledge and also revisit existing skills and

knowledge. The delivery of the above fundamental skills may use a wide range of contexts. The contexts also enable pupils to apply existing skills and knowledge. Pupils may also access the fundamental skills of movement, dependent on their personal and social development, through carefully set up environments to explore, practice and extend their skills and knowledge. This is supported by quality adult interaction and modelling. The below table provides current focus through which fundamental skills of movement may optionally be taught within.

Pupils who have complex physical difficulties will also have strong emphasis in postural management and

also where agreed implementation of NHS recommended therapy programmes or use of equipment. Time

may be prioritised within the PE curriculum delivery or may be additional to this.

In Key Stage 4 pupils will access for a minimum of one term each year aquatic mobility.

Pupils in Key Stage 4 will usually have a daily leisure session mid-morning and around midday.

Pupil in Key Stage 4 also have opportunities to access a range of adapted sports dependent on their prior skills and knowledge including their personal and social development.  The sports provide a context for continued practice of the fundamental skills of movement and also to support pupils wider knowledge and vocabulary. It enables identification of activities that may motivate and also support access outside of school to leisure activities now and for long term future. This may include table cricket/cricket, Boccia/New Age Kurling, Tennis, Indoor Athletics, Football games and volley ball. All are adapted.

Pupils in Key Stage 4 additionally access Forest Schools and also adapted activities/ sports which may include  Arthog Activity Centre, Fishing,  Archery and Walking and Orienteering for a block during the Key Stage.

There are a range of interventions that teachers can select from such as drama games, Sherbourne Movement, Musical Interaction which are selected linked to the pupils previously assessed skills and knowledge that may be revisited to enable them to retain their prior learning or their next steps.

There are also blocks of planned activities linked to specific skills and knowledge progression that teachers select based on the pupils previously assessed skills and knowledge that may be revisited to enable them to retain their prior learning or their next steps e.g. Road safety, emotions, internet safety and relationships. This work is closely linked to the relationships and sex education policy.

Business and Enterprise

The Business and Enterprise Project provides opportunities for pupils across the secondary phase to work on the same project for one lesson each week.  Each term has a focus covering 7 areas. Enterprise, Technology and the Media, Community Participation, Identify and Cultural Diversity, Creativity and Critical Thinking, Healthy Lifestyles, Global Dimension and Sustainable Development.  Topics relate to each of these areas for example, Healthy Lifestyles could cover topics from Healthy Living to the Olympic Games.

Hobbies and Careers

Hobbies and Careers sessions take place each week. A termly focus and range of activities supports readiness for the next phase of education and wider world.

Key Stage 5

The Bridge currently has a small number of pupils who remain in Key Stage 5. The pupils have highly complex combined medical and physical needs in addition to profound learning difficulties. The units  provide themes and contexts for the underpinning cross-curricular skills and knowledge and working towards the EHCP 12 month outcomes set with parents/carers.

The provision continues to build on the curriculum areas and courses provided in Key Stage 4.  Teachers can do a reduced number of units to enable other priorities to be  worked on, Links are made to Social Care Adult Services and focus on engagement of services to support transition.
