Objects of Reference (OOR)

An object of reference is any object that is used continuously to represent an activity/ item/ place or person.
Understanding objects is the first stage of symbolic development. These objects are then used to help a child understand what is happening in their environment. Objects of reference need to be used
consistently and repeatedly across the child’s day to support their understanding. Creating a box/ basket to store your child’s objects of reference in, can help to be consistent in using them throughout the day.
